For a few years now, I’ve been working with the youth group at my sweet little church in Nashville, TN and somehow, I’ve found myself leading our motley little crew of Jesus Apprentices. So, naturally, I thought that this would be a great opportunity to use Tether my Heart as our curriculum – you know, test it out in its entirety.
I’m thrilled to say that it’s been a beautiful experience and has truly helped me hone Tether my Heart as a working curriculum. I’ve snuck the scripture songs into Spotify playlists that we jam out to while playing 9 square and noshing junk food, and have caught the kids singing along. And I’ve noticed that, each week, while I read that week’s reading to them, it’s possibly the only time the kids are truly quiet and tuned in. Win!
So lately, I’ve been thinking about what else I could add to Tether – and I think I struck gold. Everybody, from little kids to adults learn best experientially. When we get our bodies involved in an activity, it somehow builds learning synapses that our brains alone don’t build. So, I thought, why not sprinkle in some activities, games and ice breakers in, that illustrate our weekly readings?
So I’ve tried this out with my youth group – and it has not only been a ton of fun for all of us, but has really helped cement the truth that we are studying that week.
If you are utilizing Tether as a Sunday School class (whether adult, youth or kids), a youth group leader, a Bible study leader or homeschool teacher, these activities and games work beautifully and require very little prep (because we all have enough on our plates, am I right?).
Activities are tied to specific reading and are found with discussion questions, but they can also be used on their own, as each activity is tied to a Biblical truth. Use them however you like, and let me know what you think!!
