1. The Book of Job
– Author: Written by an unknown author living in the land of Uz (likely a land northeast of Palestine). Possibly Job, Moses, Solomon or another.
– When: ~ 2000-1800 BC
– Genre: Wisdom literature
– Purpose: To show God’s sovereignty
2. – Who was Job?
-God-fearing, wealthy, respected, blessed in family and abundance.
3. The angels meet with God, Satan crashes the meeting, contends Job is righteous only because he’s spoiled.
– They make a deal; Satan can do what he wants as long as Job’s life is spared.
4. Job’s servants and livestock and family are destroyed -> Job remains steadfast.
5. Round two – Satan and God meet. Job’s health is destroyed. -> Job remains steadfast.
6. Round 3 – Job’s friends criticize and blame -> Job remains steadfast.
7. God finally speaks. His ways are unfathomable

8. Job is humbled before God.
9. His trial is over, his life is restored (chapter 42)
10. But our scripture is in the 19th chapter – right in the midst of Job’s suffering – his words of praise were not spoken when things were going well.
– Praise in the midst of suffering.
